Just a board on the wall of a classroom? According to Aditi Pandey in the article “How Teachers Can Maintain An Effective Bulletin Board” bulletin boards are an essential component of classrooms. They provide a way to introduce new material or display student work. (Pandey, A., & Pandey, A. 2022). It is a board on the wall of a classroom, office, etc., where things (such as written notices or pictures) are put so that they can be seen by many people.  (Britannica Dictionary, N. D.)

Definition: 

A bulletin board refers to a display board, usually made of cork or similar materials, that is commonly found in classrooms, school hallways, or other educational settings. The primary purpose of a bulletin board is to showcase and share important information, announcements, student work, or educational content in a visually appealing and engaging manner.

Reasons for their use in Language Teaching

  1. Informational display: Teachers use bulletin boards to post important information such as class schedules, upcoming events, field trips, exam dates, and school-wide announcements. This helps keep students and parents informed about the school's activities and schedules.
  2. Showcasing student work: Teachers often use bulletin boards to exhibit exemplary student work, such as artwork, projects, essays, or achievements. Displaying student work on bulletin boards provides recognition and motivation for students and encourages them to take pride in their accomplishments.
  3. Theme-based learning: Bulletin boards are frequently designed to complement the current learning theme or topic in the classroom. They can feature relevant images, vocabulary words, and educational materials that support the curriculum, making learning more interactive and engaging.
  4. Promoting literacy and reading: Some bulletin boards are dedicated to promoting reading and literacy. They may feature book reviews, book recommendations, quotes from famous authors, or information about reading challenges to encourage a love for reading among students.
  5. Inspiration and motivation: Bulletin boards can also be used to display motivational quotes, success stories, or messages to inspire students and create a positive and encouraging learning environment.
